Mat is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Biological Sciences and the UWA Oceans Institute. A leading marine scientist, his research focuses on blue carbon ecosystems and the science, policy, and finance needed to support their role in climate mitigation and adaptation. With over 25 years of research experience across the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and Caribbean regions, he has advanced understanding of the factors shaping coastal ecosystems and their responses to human activities. His work bridges marine ecology, climate policy, and international collaboration to strengthen the sustainable management of coastal environments.

Oceane Attlan

Océane is a marine scientist and PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia specialising in seaweed and fish ecology, climate change impacts, and ecosystem restoration. A certified scientific diver in both France and Australia, she conducts field-based research on how marine heatwaves and tropicalisation are reshaping temperate reef ecosystems along the Western Australian coast. Her work investigates the consequences of shifting species distributions on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and the resilience of kelp-dominated habitats. Through ecological surveys and community analysis, Océane contributes to understanding and managing climate-driven changes in marine ecosystems.

Initially a general engineer for industry, Mathieu has reoriented his career towards sustainable development to be in line with his personal convictions. After obtaining a PhD in “energy and meteorology”, he has co-founded and then managed an engineering consultancy working in the energy, acoustics and environment sectors. Since 2010, Mathieu has been a lecturer at ESIROI, in the Building and Energy specialization. His wish is that the engineers who graduate from ESIROI will participate in the energy and ecological transition of La Reunion economy. With this in mind, he teaches to promote innovative design methods and encourage his students to think ethically about their future actions and commitments. He is also a researcher in the PIMENT laboratory (Physics and Mathematical Engineering for Energy, the Environment and Buildings).
