From Lab to Leap: Deep Tech to Bold Ventures

French Tech Australia is organising an event dedicated to biotechnologies called "From Lab to Leap: Deep Tech to Bold Ventures" in partnership with the WEHI research institute, the Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne, and Invest Victoria.


This event will be held under the patronage of the French Embassy in Australia on the margins of the AusBiotech Conference, which is Australia's largest life sciences and biotech conference, with more than 1600 participants last year, and will be held in Melbourne from October 21st to October 24th, 2025.


The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) is one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia, with over 1,400 researchers. Based in Melbourne, WEHI’s scientists work at the forefront of cancer, infectious diseases, immune disorders, and developmental biology research, translating breakthrough science into new diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies.


From Lab to Leap: DeepTech to Bold Venture” will begin with remarks from institutional leaders and policymakers, providing context on the role of biotech and Franco-Australian collaboration in driving innovation in the biotech field. 


The keynote speakers will be Mary-Anne Thomas, the Minister for Health of Victoria, Paule Ignatio, Consul General of France in Melbourne, Marnie Blewitt, Deputy Director of WEHI and Prof Frederic Hollande, Deputy Head of the Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne.


This will be followed by a panel discussion and presentations from five pioneering BioTech startups, outlining their path from research to commercialisation. 

 

Guest panelists will be Dr Amanda Caples, Victoria's Lead Scientist, Masha Pelipas - Research Acceleration Manager, TRAM AIR at Melbourne University, Dr Anne-Laure Puaux - Head of Business Development of WEHI, and Eric Potier - Co-Founder of Accelera Biopharma.


The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A, followed by a networking opportunity where participants can continue their conversations and explore potential collaborations over drinks.


This event will be hosted by Prof Lauren Ayton AM, Associate Dean of Innovation and Enterprise, Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne.

Attendees will mainly be from the medical and biotech ecosystem, including researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, students, and industry leaders.
