The Ocean Innovators® Indo-Pacific Governance Workshop Sparks Excitement and Collaboration!


Brisbane, July 20, 2023 – The Ocean Innovators® event burst into life on Wednesday, July 19th, 2023, as passionate innovators gathered in Brisbane for the Indo-Pacific Governance Workshop. With the aim to steer sustainable change in the region, attendees dove into discussions that promised to shape the future of our oceans.


Backed by the support of the Australian-French Association for Research and Innovation (AFRAN) and the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), this event was held at the heart of the EcoSciences Precinct, where participants discussed the topic of Governance that resonated with issues spanning marine systems, climate change, conservation, and cutting-edge technology, but also catalyzing innovation, fostering cultural exchange, and driving sustainability.


A/Prof Pedro FIDELMAN presented the crucial role institutions play in shaping our response to global environmental shifts. Prof. Steven UNDERHILL explained Pacific food systems, emphasizing the collaborative threads that weave the fabric of sustainable marine resource management. Prof. Bernard DEGNAN promoted innovations in relation to genomics, development, and evolution in coral reef invertebrates, while Vikki LOWE presented the oceans' role in sculpting our planet's climate over time. Dr. Robert MASON took attendees on a deep dive into the impact of anchor damage on reefs, unveiling innovative mitigation techniques. Colin SCOBIE ignited hope with his discussion on shellfish reef restoration, sparking conversations about effective governance measures. Vic GROSJEAN, highlighted the pivotal role governance plays in marine systems, advocating for responsible resource management.


The workshop concluded with a post-event networking at the iconic Redbrick Hotel, where conversations went on, new bonds formed, and fresh collaborations blossomed.


The Ocean Innovators® event was a testament to the undeniable power of collaboration and the human spirit's capacity for change. Through passionate dialogue, innovative ideas, and a shared commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, this gathering underscored the oceans' pivotal role in our planet's well-being.
