The Embassy of France in Australia, in partnership with Adelaide University, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the French–Australian Laboratory for Human–Machine Teaming (IRL Crossing), is pleased to announce the launch of applications for the “Tech for Sustainability Hackathon – your ideas in energy, environment, social sciences and health.”

The hackathon will take place at Adelaide University on 22–23 June 2026 and will bring together students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers from diverse backgrounds to collaborate on innovative and sustainable solutions for the future.

This unique initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration between French and Australian participants while encouraging the development of impactful ideas and entrepreneurial projects.

Over one and a half days, participants will work in teams to design new initiatives, technologies, services, or start-up concepts addressing key challenges related to:

  • Sustainable development

  • Energy transition

  • Environmental innovation

  • Green technologies

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Social sciences and health

A particular focus will be placed on the role of artificial intelligence, both as a driver of ecological transition and as a technology whose environmental footprint must be carefully considered.

Applications are open to:

  • PhD students and early-career researchers from Australia and the French Pacific territories

  • Master’s degree students from all disciplines, backgrounds, and nationalities

Depending on applicants’ location, financial support for travel to Adelaide may be available, particularly for students from the French Pacific territories.

Participants will be assigned to multidisciplinary teams of 4–5 members according to their expertise and profile. Throughout the event, mentors and coaches from academic and industry backgrounds will provide guidance, practical advice, and short workshops on innovation and company creation.
