[REPORT] Women in AI: How are we championing inclusive and sustainable AI?

The event, “Women in AI: How are we championing sustainable and inclusive AI?” was held in Sydney on December 11. It brought together leaders from the French and Australian tech communities to discuss responsible artificial intelligence development, with a particular focus on women's leadership. The evening featured an expert panel discussion covering AI environmental sustainability, inclusive innovation, and responsible AI frameworks.

This event built on the 2025 AI Action Summit held in Paris, France in February 2025, which resulted in an international declaration signed by 64 countries and international organisations, including Australia and France, establishing principles for sustainable, human-centered AI.

This event report addresses 5 key questions:

1.      Why should companies embrace responsible AI practices?

2.      What can we learn about AI governance from a 1993 use case?

3.      How can companies manage AI’s ecological impact?

4.      Is Gen AI really fostering inclusive innovation?

5.      How can startup founders build and use AI responsibly?

It then offers recommendations to companies and start-ups to manage AI responsibly, and individuals to advocate for inclusive and sustainable AI in their work.

We recognise the importance of international partnerships to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure aligned approaches. By working together on shared challenges, from productivity enhancement to environmental sustainability to ensuring AI benefits all members of society, both Australia and France can contribute to shaping AI's development in ways that serve humanity's best interests while fostering innovation and economic opportunity.
